  • Face detected

The photo must contain a clearly visible face.

  • Exactly one face

Official photos must show only the applicant.

  • Face large enough

A too-small face loses the detail officials need.

  • Facing forward

Your head must face the camera squarely, not tilted or turned.

  • Head is the right size

Your head has to fill a set amount of the photo.

  • Eyes at the right height

Your eyes need to sit in the required spot.

  • Head centered

The head must be horizontally centered in the frame.

  • Eyes open

Both eyes must be open and clearly visible.

  • Mouth closed

A neutral expression with a closed mouth is required.

  • Photo is sharp

The photo has to be in focus, not blurry.

  • Brightness is right

Your face has to be evenly lit — not too dark or too bright.

  • No harsh shadows

Shadows across your face aren't allowed.

  • White background

The finished photo needs one plain background in your document's required color — no patches, shadows, or halo around your hair.

  • Full-frame photo

The finished photo must fill the whole frame without solid border bars or padding stripes.

  • Fits the required crop

Your photo must be large enough, with enough room around your head, to crop to the document's exact size.

  • Sharp enough to print

The cropped photo needs enough detail to print clearly at the required resolution (DPI).

  • No floating head

Your head and shoulders should reach the bottom of the frame — the head shouldn't appear to float with empty space below it.

  • Eyes on camera

Both eyes should look straight into the camera, not off to the side.

  • Shoulders in frame

Your shoulders should be visible — the photo shouldn't be cropped at the neck.

  • Face relaxed

Your expression should look neutral, without clearly raised eyebrows.

  • Neutral expression

A neutral expression is required — no smiling or frowning.

  • Headwear

Hats and head coverings are not allowed (religious exceptions apply).

  • No eyeglasses

This document doesn't allow eyeglasses of any kind.

  • Face unobstructed

Nothing may cover your face — hair, hands, or objects.

  • Looking at camera

Your gaze must be directed at the camera.

  • Authentic photo

The image must be a genuine, unedited photograph.

  • Sharp and clear photo

The photo must be crisp and clear — not grainy, soft, or low-light.

  • No other disqualifying issue

Passport photos must not include props, held objects, animals, extra people, or distracting scene elements.

  • Shoulders squared to camera

Passport photos should show your shoulders level and squared to the camera — not raised, hunched, or twisted like a selfie.

  • Photo of you

The photo must be your own photo, not a picture of a public figure or celebrity.

  • Lighting quality

A second, AI-based look at your lighting, on top of the brightness and shadow checks above.

  • Recently taken

Some authorities require a recent photo, usually within the last 6 months. We'll keep going, but use a newer photo if you can.

  • Large enough to print

Your photo should have enough pixels to print sharply at passport size. We'll keep going either way — this is just a heads-up.
